What a Gearbox and Drive-Train Overhaul Involves

A gearbox replacement or overhaul is not a single-component swap — it changes one part of a mechanical chain, so we treat the surrounding drive train as part of the same job. Across our published gearbox and drive-shaft projects, the sequence is consistent:

  1. Baseline measurement before dismantling — vibration, alignment, coupling gap and shaft-end distance, fan blade angle, tip clearance and tip tracking, all recorded so the “as-found” condition is on record before anything is removed.
  2. Removal and workshop inspection — drain gearbox oil, dismantle, clean, and inspect with liquid-penetrant testing to find cracks that a visual check alone would miss.
  3. Component replacement — bearings, oil seals, gaskets and O-rings renewed; a damaged or worn gearbox or drive shaft replaced outright where overhaul isn’t viable.
  4. Reinstallation and alignment — gearbox and motor realigned (laser alignment, per our Kanchanaburi biofuel-site case study), fan geometry rechecked, lubricant refilled.
  5. Post-install verification — vibration measurement and a test run before the unit is handed back.

Downtime and Scheduling

Drive-train work means the affected cell is out of service for the duration — our Suphan Buri gearbox overhaul used a 25-tonne crane for removal and reinstallation, which is turnaround-scale work, not a same-shift repair. We coordinate with plant maintenance planners to schedule this kind of work during planned turnarounds, and on multi-cell towers we can often work cell by cell so the rest of the tower keeps running. We don’t yet publish a general day-count figure for a gearbox overhaul cycle — actual duration depends on scope (in-place service vs. full removal and workshop rebuild) and on parts lead time, so ask us for a schedule against your specific equipment rather than a generic number.
