What the type is
Factory-assembled towers undergo virtually complete assembly at the factory and are shipped to site in as few sections as the mode of transport permits. They are also known as packaged or unitary towers. Larger multi-cell towers are assembled as cells or modules at the factory and shipped with the hardware for joining them on site. Factory-assembled towers predominate in steel construction, with stainless steel increasingly used in locations, or for processes, that tend to promote corrosion (Cooling Tower Fundamentals, Section I, “Characterization by Construction”, and Section II, “C. Tower Framework”).
When it is the right choice
- Plant size — package towers start at the small end of our range. All large towers are prefabricated, piece-marked and assembled on site.
- Time and site work — almost complete assembly at the factory means less assembly on site.
- Water and atmosphere — stainless steel construction is used where corrosion is a concern.
