FRP Crossflow Cooling Towers in Thailand

FRP crossflow cooling towers in Thailand: what the type is, when it is the right choice, and how Synergy Services designs, builds and installs it.

An FRP crossflow cooling tower is a tower in which the air passes horizontally through a curtain of falling water, built on a fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) structure.

What the type is

In crossflow the air crosses the fill horizontally while the water falls through it. Water is distributed by gravity instead of through pressurised spray nozzles, and the fill can be reached from outside the cell. Because the water curtain spans the whole temperature range, much of the air meets water that is already cooled, so the average driving potential is smaller for the same fill volume (crossflow vs counterflow; Cooling Tower Fundamentals).

When it is the right choice

  • Pump head — gravity water distribution instead of pressurised spray nozzles reduces pump head.
  • Access — better access to the fill from outside the cell for inspection and cleaning.
  • Air path — a shorter and lower-resistance air path.
  • Trade-off — a larger footprint for the same duty, and less efficient use of the fill volume.

How it compares with the other types

  • FRP counterflow: more efficient use of the fill and a smaller footprint, with pressurised water distribution.
  • Concrete: a concrete structure for larger installations.
  • Package: assembled at the factory for less work on site.

A crossflow tower must be evaluated with the crossflow method. Fitting counterflow fill into a crossflow geometry, or the reverse, is not a like-for-like swap: the tower’s duty has to be re-established, not assumed.

How we deliver this type

We design and build the tower from components sourced from many suppliers, and install it on your site. The process is the same for every new tower: survey, thermal sizing, design, build, installation, a CTI ATC-105 acceptance test by our team and, if you want it, a maintenance contract. See new cooling towers, from enquiry to handover. Every tower is sized and quoted per project.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is an FRP crossflow tower the right choice?

When pump head and access to the fill matter more than footprint. A crossflow tower distributes water by gravity instead of through pressurised spray nozzles, which reduces pump head; its air path is shorter and lower in resistance; and the fill can be reached from outside the cell for inspection and cleaning. The price is a larger footprint for the same duty and a less efficient use of the fill volume.

Can a crossflow tower be evaluated with a counterflow calculation?

No. In crossflow the air-side conditions change along the direction of air travel, so the calculation is two-dimensional and the tower characteristic is obtained differently. Applying a counterflow demand integral to a crossflow tower gives a number that is precise but not the tower's duty.

Do you have FRP crossflow reference projects?

This site does not list a crossflow reference project. The reference list is available on request.
