What Is Cooling Tower Performance Testing?
Performance testing evaluates how effectively your cooling tower is transferring heat compared to its original design specifications. It measures key parameters such as:
- Thermal performance — Is the tower achieving its rated cooling capacity?
- Airflow volume — Are the fans moving enough air through the fill media?
- Water distribution — Is water being evenly distributed across the fill?
- Range — The hot-water temperature minus the cold-water temperature across the tower.
- Approach — The cold-water temperature minus the entering wet-bulb temperature; how close the tower gets to the theoretical limit set by ambient air.
The results are compared against CTI ATC-105 — the cooling tower industry’s Acceptance Test Code for Water Cooling Towers, published by the Cooling Technology Institute (CTI) — to give an objective picture of your system’s condition.

Performance testing identifies degraded fill media, fouled nozzles, damaged fan blades, and worn drive components before they cause a failure. This allows maintenance to be scheduled during planned shutdowns rather than emergency stoppages.

What Happens During a Performance Test?
A professional performance test typically involves:
- Installing calibrated instruments to measure wet-bulb temperature, dry-bulb temperature, water flow rate, cold water temperature, hot water temperature, and fan power
- Collecting data over a stable operating period
- Analysing results using the CTI Toolkit or equivalent thermal modelling software
- Issuing a report with findings, KPIs, and recommendations
